FARMVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A man running for his first political office has defeated a three-term mayor in one Eastern Carolina town.

Alex Joyner overtook incumbent Mayor John Moore in Tuesday’s election to become Farmville’s new mayor, winning 710 votes to Moore’s 618 for 53% of the vote.

A crowd at Farmville Pizza erupted in cheers when the results were announced, celebrating Joyner’s victory over Moore, who was seeking his fourth term after six years in office.

“I don’t know if I have words to put to it right now. This has been a dream and something we have been fighting for months now,” Joyner said.

Moore thanked his supporters and reflected on his time in office as he prepares to exit.

“For the voters who came out today, I want to thank you for your support and those of you who have believed in me for the last 6 years, it’s kind of like planting a garden. Just sit back, because what we have planted over the last 6 years will begin to grow. Thank you again,” Moore said.

Joyner thanked Moore for his years of service, but believes it’s time for new leadership in the Pitt County town.

“We need to focus on long-term strategy, 15-20 year strategy plans for a lot of things like our infrastructure, our business community, our finances. We need to stop wasting tax payer money,” Joyner said.

The new mayor said he hopes his identity as a member of the LGBTQ community will inspire others.

“I hope that this gives hope to other people that are out there whether you are black, LGBT, any other minority, that you can achieve anything if you just go out there and fight for it,” Joyner said.

Voter turnout increased significantly from the 2023 municipal elections, with 1,144 people voting compared to 844 two years ago.

Joyner said he’s ready to get out in the community and hear what everyone’s needs are because there’s work to be done.
