BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - At their monthly meeting Monday night, the Beaufort County Commissioners hired a new county manager.

They appointed Tim Corley to replace Brian Alligood, who is retiring.

Corley is currently a deputy county manager in Pitt County and a county engineer.

The vote was 4-3, with commissioners Jerry Langley, Frankie Waters, Randy Walker, Tandy Dunn voting in favor.

Hood Richardson, Ed Booth, and Stan Deatherage voted against.

Waters said they had 70 applicants and they tried to find someone with a lot of experience in city and county government and said Corley is that person.

Those who opposed the hiring said they were not against Corley, but could not support the contract because Corley would not have to move to Beaufort County, and would also be allowed to work a second job in addition to being the county manager.

“I am deeply honored and appreciative of the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners for the opportunity to serve as your next county manager,” Corley said. “I look forward to collaborating with the Board, staff, and citizens to build upon our community’s successes and enhance the high quality of life we all cherish. Together, we will ensure that Beaufort County remains a premier destination to live, work, and play through dedicated leadership and innovative stewardship.”

Corley is set to start on June 1st. Alligood will retire on June 30th.
