Dashcam video captures 18-wheeler crash in Goldsboro
GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WITN) - A multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler shook drivers and bystanders Saturday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 70 and North Oak Forest Road in Goldsboro, leaving nine people injured — including two who were flown for medical treatment, according to officials.
Rico McDowell said he witnessed the crash while running errands around 12:30 p.m., and his dashcam captured the moment.
“It was going great. Traffic was good. I came up to the light. Everything seemed normal at the time,” McDowell said.
McDowell said he noticed the tractor-trailer approaching the intersection at a high speed.
“I could see the cab coming up at a high rate speed so it caught my attention immediately. I’m a former truck driver so I look out for things like this. Before I knew it, he hit six cars,” he said.
The video captures the impact, followed by McDowell’s reaction.
“Oh my god.”
McDowell described the collision as immediate and intense.
“It was a very loud explosion once you made contacts with the vehicles,” he said.
He said he jumped out of his vehicle to try to help people who appeared trapped.
“I was frantic. I was wanting to get to the people who was hurt the most,” McDowell said.
McDowell also began livestreaming at the scene. He said six cars and 11 people were impacted.
“It was completely just mangled — wrapped around — just metal everywhere and there was nothing that we could do on the scene as civilians because we didn’t have any equipment pulled out,” he said.
McDowell, a former truck driver, said he hopes other drivers take the crash as a reminder.
“Please pay attention. If you’re tired, pull over, get some rest if you need. Do not be distracted — cases like that will cause things like this that happen today,” he said.
Officials said there are no updates on the conditions of those injured at this time. The crash remains under investigation, and more details are expected to be released as they become available.
