WASHINGTON, D.C. (WITN) - Congressman Greg Murphy is requesting that he not get paid amid the Department of Homeland Security shutdown.

In a statement, Murphy said he asked acting Chief Administrative Officer Anne Binsted to withhold his pay until an agreement on DHS funding has been reached.

“I am proud to have voted for this critical funding, but do not believe members of Congress should be paid if we fail to accomplish the basic responsibility of keeping the government open,” Congressman Murphy said.

The Department of Homeland Security shutdown has entered a sixth week, with an impasse over a funding deal. President Donald Trump is now urging Republicans not to support any funding deals until Democrats agree to pass the SAVE America Act.

The bill requires individuals to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, among other provisions.

“Right now, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has not been funded for FY26, and personnel are being forced to work without pay. We are in a very dangerous time and must be on high alert for foreign threats. However, to make a political point, Democrats have blocked the passage of appropriations, forcing the federal government into a partial shutdown,” Murphy said in a statement.

Democrats have said for weeks that the SAVE America Act is a nonstarter.
