SLOW DOWN: Speed limit officially lowered on Greenville’s East 10th Street
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The speed limit on a state highway that runs adjacent to the East Carolina University campus has officially been lowered.
Greenville City Council voted last month to drop the speed limit on East 10th Street from 35 mph to 25 mph.
It will affect the section between Elm Street and Evans Street.
Department of Transportation workers were seen putting up the new signs this morning.
The speed change happened after a series of accidents involving people trying to cross the busy street.
“It’s just one more safety measure taking place on the 10th street section,“ Mayor P.J. Connelly said. ”We are thankful that NCDOT are able to reduce the speed on the corridor. I’m hopeful that people will be able to slow down and hopefully the pedestrians pay attention crossing the road. Hopefully we can get people safe in that area.”
The section of East 10th Street is also still being studied for a potential pedestrian bridge, along with the section of Memorial Drive near West 5th Street.
