Bridge repairs to start on major Bertie County highway
BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Beginning next week, US 13/17 in Bertie County will undergo a bridge repair project that spans several months.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said work will start on Monday and last through September 13.
Lane closures will begin on the Roanoke River bridge in Martin County and extend into Bertie County.
Crews will work on the southbound bridges first, and drivers will switch over to the northbound side of US 13/17. That section will become a two-lane road with a 45 mph speed limit.
After those two bridges are finished, the same will happen on the northbound bridges.
While traffic is sharing one lane of the highway, concrete barriers will separate the two directions to keep drivers safe.
When all four bridges are completed, traffic will return to normal.
