BEAUFORT, N.C. (WITN) - Around 100 people gathered this afternoon in front of the Carteret County Courthouse, protesting yesterday’s deadly ICE shooting in Minneapolis.

Several people held pictures of Renee Good, the 37-year-old mother of three, who was shot by an ICE agent. Others held signs saying ‘Stop ICE’s executions’, ‘Refuse to look away’, and ‘ICE is domestic terrorism’.

The Carteret County Democratic Party planned the protest, which remained peaceful as people lined both sides of Turner Street.

“Going around and trying to terrorize the communities around the country. These people are mercenaries,” said Charles Llewellyn, a protestor.

The demonstration in Beaufort lasted about an hour. Other ICE protests are planned this evening in Asheville, Charlotte, and Raleigh.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Good ignored commands to get out of her car and tried to run over an officer.

The officer was struck by the vehicle and treated at a hospital before being released, Noem said.

Co-organizer Liz Becker said she believes the shooting was the result of poor training rather than malicious intent.

“I don’t think he should go to prison unless they can prove it was premeditated,” Becker said. “But to me, it looks like he was careless, reckless, and not trained very well.”

However, co-organizer Judy Siguaw has a different take about what went on in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

“I know she didn’t obey them, but there was no reason for him to shoot her. She drove away, and the frame-by-frame analysis shows that she veered away from him,” Siguaw said. “He shot her point-blank, turned to the side window, and kept shooting. It just seemed needless.”

This is at least the fifth death linked to immigration crackdowns in major cities under the Trump administration.

Some 2,000 federal officers have been deployed to the Minneapolis area in what Homeland Security says is its largest immigration enforcement operation ever.
