CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A new emergency services director has been named in Carteret County.

The county says that William Matthias II will begin serving in the role on January 26th.

Matthias is currently the fire chief in Emerald Isle and brings more than 18 years of leadership experience to the position, according to Carteret County.

In addition to emergency management, Matthias will oversee emergency medical services, emergency communications, and the Office of the Fire Marshal.

We’re told Matthias holds a Master of Public Administration in emergency services management and a Bachelor of Science in fire administration from Columbia Southern University, as well as an Associate of Science in fire science.

Matthias will replace Stephen Rea who was fired from the post back in September.
