DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Highway 12 in Dare County reopened late this afternoon, while a second section of the highway on Ocracoke Island will remain closed due to major ocean overwash.

The DOT says the section between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe opened to traffic again at 5 p.m.

The closed portion on the north end of Ocracoke between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the ferry terminal is expected to reopen Friday at 5 p.m.

Both sections of the highway shut down yesterday because the ocean overwash was creating dangerous driving conditions.

The state says Highway 12 is passable and open elsewhere, but urges drivers to be cautious due to sand and water on the roadway.
