UPDATE: Deputies investigating Pitt County home invasion, assault
PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Pitt County deputies are investigating after a person was assaulted during a home invasion.
It happened at home on Louis Street in the Cherry Oaks neighborhood off of Fire Tower Road.
Deputies went to the home at 3:16 a.m.
The sheriff’s office says the person who was attacked was taken to ECU Health Medical Center by ambulance. We’re told the nature and extent of their injuries is not being released.
“This is very scary. It’s a very scary thing to see that,” said Phyllis Coulson, who lives in the neighborhood.
Detectives and forensic units were there all morning.
“Detectives are hard at work investigating, pulling in the details and trying to resolve the case,” said Lt. Lee Darnell of the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.
The home, which is off Fire Tower Road, was wrapped in crime scene tape, and deputies entering the home were seen wearing protective shoe coverings, which are used to keep from contaminating crime scenes.
Just across the street, children were outside playing at St. Timothy’s Church preschool during the full swing of the investigation.
Preschool officials told parents today they were assured by deputies that the children were perfectly safe there.
Judy Tucker goes to St. Timothy’s. She said this won’t make her think twice about continuing to go to church there.
“I think... we can’t live in a world where there’s lots of fear,” said Tucker. “I think we have to overcome our fear and focus on love.”
Neighbors told WITN this home is an Airbnb.
Darnell said no one yet is in custody for the crimes.
