Residents gear up as storm covers Plymouth in snow
PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WITN) - Around 11:45 a.m. Saturday morning, the streets of Plymouth were covered with light flurries of snow and high winds.
Around an hour later, temperatures had dropped three degrees, and Plymouth was coated in a whole layer of snow, with very few drivers on the road.
Residents like Ronnie Norman were out and about as the storm began, with comments on the weather.
“It’s starting to look like it’s going to be bad. Snow is coming down, and it’s sticking, and the wind is blowing. It looks like it’s going to settle in for a while,” said Norman.
Residents claimed they were prepared for the storm by ensuring they had generators, basic groceries, batteries, and back-up water in case the power were to go out.
Business owners and curators of Downtown Plymouth made an early decision to close all of the downtown storefronts.
Kimberly Leary, owner of Unique Boutique and Antiques, said, “We will be closing down for the safety of our customers and for us, and we think it’s best that we shut down.”
Washington County declared a state of emergency on January 30th, stating that travel within the county should be limited to essential purposes only.
However, many residents were not concerned, as they already had their snow day indoors planned.
By 5 p.m. Saturday, Plymouth city officials reported that there were DOT plows in the area to create safer surfaces on the main roads.
