Greenville fire crews tackle massive warehouse fire overnight
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Firefighters in Greenville had a busy night after a fire ripped through a warehouse Sunday night.
Greenville Fire/Rescue Chief Jeremy Anderson says it happened around 11:50 at the 300 block of Martin Street.
Anderson says crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions at a 125,000 square foot warehouse owned by ScaffoldMart. The building contained scaffolding supplies, Anderson says.
Anderson says at one point there were 60 firefighters and 10 fire trucks on scene battling the blaze.
Crew efforts were able to stop the fire from spreading through an additional warehouse as well as to nearby homes, an effort that Horace Worsley, who was visiting his sister’s house right beside the warehouse, appreciated.
“We looked, and the fire just started worsening and worsening, man. It started in a little pile right here, then it got worse and worse, then flames just...boom,” Worsley said. “It got so bad to the point I thought the back tree behind my sister’s house was gonna catch on fire, and I thought maybe we had to evacuate.
Anderson says one firefighter suffered a minor head injury. They were taken to ECU Health and released this morning.
No one was inside the building when the fire erupted. Anderson says it was closed for the holidays.
The cause is under investigation.
Anderson says they’ll be continuing to work hotspots at the scene and anticipate being there into the evening.
