NEW BERN, NC (WITN) - A man and woman have been sentenced for the murder of a man that happened five years ago near a park in New Bern.

District Attorney Matt Wareham says Kenneth Ward and Nicole Green both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Muzungu Muteba.

The 30-year-old man was found shot near Don Miller Park on February 2, 2020.

The D.A. says Muteba was killed during a botched robbery. As the victim was known to carry cash, Green pretended to go on a date with Muteba and the others would rob him at the park, according to a news release.

Muteba fought back, and the D.A. says one of the co-defendants shot him in the chest.

A judge sentenced Ward to prison for 21 to 26 years, while Green received a 16 to 20-year term.

Co-defendants Rahlik Bryant and Quinzell Sanders had already pleaded guilty for their parts in the murder.
