Colorado State University releases 2025 Hurricane season predictions
Forecasters expect a near average season

Even though spring just began a few weeks ago, we are less than two months from the start of the 2025 hurricane season. This is a good time to check and update your supply kit if needed.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. As of Thursday morning, Colorado State University is predicting a near-average hurricane season, similar to what the average hurricane season showcases. The forecast is based on warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic Oceans.
With last year’s forecast, we saw warmer-than-normal water temperatures than in past years. However, while the water temperatures are warm, they are not as active and busy as they were in 2024.
Here are the names for the 2025 hurricane season that are listed below for this year. This was the list that was used in the 2019 season. Most of the names remained, minus Hurricane Dorian, which was retired. Dorian cost an estimated 3.4 billion in damage in the Bahamas. This year, the National Hurricane Center and NOAA replaced it with Dexter.
As we go into the start of the hurricane season, which runs from June 1-November 30, be sure to stay with WITN’s First Alert Weather Team for the latest on the named storms and if Eastern North Carolina will see any direct impacts this year.
