Woman charged with setting fire at Elizabeth City church

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WITN) - A woman was arrested after police say she set a fire at an Eastern Carolina church.

Elizabeth City police say it happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on West Ehringhaus Street.

Officers say a witness saw the woman, Carrietta Spence, setting a bush on fire near the church and running away. She was caught by police a few blocks away and was arrested.

Spence was charged with injury to real property and burning of churches and certain other religious buildings.

Police say she was jailed on a $10,000 secured bond.
