KURE BEACH, N.C. (WITN) - The coast of North Carolina was hit by storms on Monday, which means communities spent Tuesday cleaning up.

Roads and driveways flooded during the storm on Plymouth Street in Kure Beach.

Fritz Richardson, a resident in the area, was on his way home when he saw the impact. “There wasn’t really all that much flooding in the morning,” said Richardson. “At about 10 a.m. it started to get bad and by 1 o’clock, it was all the way flooded.”

Kure Beach Mayor Allen Oliver says flooding was constant during the storm and across the area.

“The water didn’t really have anywhere to go,” said Mayor Oliver. “Our system is not designed to take more than about an inch of rain in a 24 hour period, so we got pretty swamped.”

Mayor Oliver says there were plenty of cars in the roads that needed to be towed from the flooded waters. “There’s no telling how many cars we towed in out of the flood waters,” said Mayor Oliver. “That was the biggest thing we saw, people’s cars getting flooded from not sitting in their driveway, but driving in it.”

Though officials are unsure how long the cleanup will take, this is the time for the community to come together and lean on one another.

“We are a hurricane community,” said Richardson. “We are a beach community, so everybody bands together when stuff like this happens. It’s just one of those events where everyone is going to get together and help each other out.”

Oliver says the town is assisting in any way possible, residents and property owners have to call the development and compliance department.
