Spectrum truck driver taken to hospital after crash on Onslow County highway

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The driver of a Spectrum utility truck was taken to the hospital after a crash flipped the truck on its side in Onslow County.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirms the crash happened this morning on Highway 17 South near Verona.

Troopers say 49-year-old Shawn Eastep was driving a Spectrum utility truck that crashed into a Nissan driven by 22-year-old Darius Sylvester.

The truck could be seen on the side of the highway, flipped over with heavy damage, especially to the windshield and front, around 9 a.m.

Eastep was taken to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune. Sylvester was not injured, according to officials.

Troopers say speed was a contributing factor in the crash, and charges are pending against Eastep.

Several Spectrum trucks were seen at the site of the crash assisting with clean-up around 9:20 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
