WILSON COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A case of road rage on Interstate 587 ended in a shooting Monday morning, leaving one man in surgery, according to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and NC State Highway Patrol were dispatched around 7:20 a.m. to a gunshot call on I-587 near the Downing Street exit.

The NCSHP requested the sheriff’s office take over the investigation, which was initially dispatched as a careless and reckless driving call on I-587 East.

Investigators identified the two individuals involved as 20-year-old Isaiah Farden of Greenville, and 39-year-old Anthony Cape of Goldsboro. Both were traveling on I-587 toward Greenville at the time.

According to the sheriff’s office, Farden reportedly merged into Cape’s lane of travel, cutting him off, which led to aggressive behavior and reckless driving. At some point, Cape performed a PIT maneuver, striking the rear of Farden’s vehicle and causing Farden to run off the roadway and crash.

Cape then exited his vehicle, approached Farden’s car and opened the door. At that point, authorities say Farden fired several shots, striking Cape.

Cape was transported to ECU Health in Greenville, alert and conscious, and underwent surgery.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office said the case remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.
