SBI identifies man killed in Pinehurst police shooting

PINEHURST, N.C. (WITN) - The SBI has identified the man killed in the deadly police shooting in Pinehurst.

The SBI confirmed the man was 37-year-old Sawyer Frye, of Pinehurst.

Wednesday around 7:30 a.m., officers with the Pinehurst Police Department went to Remington Lane to check on a suspicious person.

Police say when they got there, a man was armed with an ax in the front yard.

Officers say they attempted to stop the man using non-deadly methods, but then shot and killed Frye.

The SBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
