New details in deadly Carteret County fire after 911 call released
CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - There are new details from 911 calls released today in a fire that killed two people in Carteret County.
Deputies say 73-year-old James Creech and a 14-year-old died in the fire Wednesday night on Merrimon Road, north of Beaufort.
Six people were inside the mobile home when it caught fire.
One woman told 911 there were three people still in the burning trailer. “It’s burning really fast. My brother and my uncle are in there” the caller told a dispatcher. 911 told the caller that help was on the way.
The people were trapped in a bedroom, according to another woman on the 9-minute call. “My son and my brother, and the guy whose house it is,” said the caller.
That caller told 911 that her brother was able to get out of the burning home.
Nearly 5 minutes into the call, 911 tells the caller not to try to put the fire out.
The Carteret County Fire Marshal’s Office and Carteret County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating what started the fire.
