Residents share concern after no update regarding two people found dead at apartment complex in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Two people were found dead inside an apartment complex in the east two weeks ago and residents are voicing frustrations with no updates from police.
Maya Amarante died on January 19th at an apartment on the Charleston Place Apartment complex property. Amarante’s family says they learned the details of her death through WITN from public information we reported that is available. Her autopsy came back as a homicide.
Residents say it’s been weeks and there has been no update as to what happened.
“I asked another friend,” said Melissa Crisantes, a Charleston Place resident. “I asked him what was going on that same day. He didn’t know anything about it either so it’s just shocking.”
Crisantes said Charleston Place Apartment Homes sent an email on January 22nd to residents regarding the deaths. However, when it comes to the police department, she said there has been no update.
“For the whole community not to know about it just kind of makes you think that if they are really trying to keep this place safe,” Crisantes told WITN.
The community continues to seek answers following a number of questions, while Deputy City Manager Ron Massey says their main concern is the safety of the community.
“Any incident if there is a public safety concern the city will notify the citizens,” Massey said. “Now if people are looking for details on what happened, that’s a whole different story.”
With questions as to what happened still unanswered, Crisantes says she’s taking precautions.
“We went to go get spare keys for everyone in the house and we are keeping the house locked at all times,” said Crisantes.
While the police department and apartment complex did not share any information with WITN, they say there is no threat to the community.
There has been no information on the other person who died, or how.
The investigation is ongoing with NCIS leading.
