GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A soup kitchen in Eastern Carolina is going one step further to help the community.

Joy Community Center and Soup Kitchen in Greenville are helping assist the homeless community by offering showers.

Today is the first day of this service. Over the past couple of weeks, work has been done to rebuild an old shower in the building from the 90’s.

Officials with the center say people can sign up on Mondays and showers will be available by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“You see people as another human being,” said Tom Quigley of the Joy Community Center and Soup Kitchen. “They aren’t a number or a race. It’s just one person helping another person. This woman is going to leave here smelling like coconut. She got a little bit of dignity walking out of doors today.”

In the future, Quigley says he hopes to add more showers so they can reach more people in the community.
