Emerald Isle floodwater pumped into ocean
EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WITN) - The brown runoff floodwater that covers Doe Street, along with others in Emerald Isle, is being pumped into the ocean surf and sound after Monday’s storm.
State recreational water quality officials indicated that the water could be contaminated with waste from wildlife and pets, as well as oil and gasoline from parking lots, septic systems, and sewers.
State officials clarify that they are not suggesting that disease-causing organisms are present in the water. However, they emphasize that there is a higher risk of contamination and advise the public to avoid areas where water is being pumped in and out.
One beachgoer visiting from Ohio says it’s not going to affect his beach day but wishes that he knew about the water pumped beforehand.
“I think it’s good to be told for awareness for all of us to know so we can be aware of it but it’s not really a concern to me because we have runoff wherever you’re at,” says beachgoer George Rouse.
State recreational water quality officials are advising people to be aware of the ocean and sound in Emerald Isle as they pump floodwater at Doe Drive, Fawn Drive, 7th Street, 15th Street, and Channel Drive to ensure safer driving conditions.
The notice also says that state officials will inform the public 24 hours after pumping has stopped.
