An EF-0 tornado was confirmed Monday afternoon from severe thunderstorms
Wind speeds were around 75-85 mph
Monday’s severe thunderstorms produced an EF-0 tornado over Eastern North Carolina in Cedar Island in Carteret County, according to the National Weather Service in Morehead City. This now marks the 5th EF-0 tornado in the state. Of the five EF-0 tornadoes, this is the second one in ENC this year, as Jacksonville saw damage back in early March.
The tornado had winds around 75-85 miles per hour and was on the ground for 0.18 miles. The width remains unknown at this time due to the extensive marshland and lack of other areas, according to the National Weather Service. A few trees were snapped as the tornado passed by the coastal areas.
At 4:34 p.m. Monday, a Tornado Warning was issued for Carteret County and expired at 5 p.m., as it was radar indicated. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was then issued at 5;15 p.m. for southwestern Carteret County and continued until 5:45 p.m. after the tornado-warned storm expired.
According to the National Weather Service, pictures of a funnel cloud were circulating on social media around the time the tornado warning was issued. However, those pictures were likely from either a separate funnel cloud or even another tornado.
If additional information is needed this week, the National Weather Service will send a second survey out to assess the damage as needed.
