Investigation continues after hours-long Oak City standoff ends in surrender
MARTIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Law enforcement is still investigating after a standoff at an Oak City home yesterday.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are both investigating what happened.
A man barricaded himself inside a house on East Second Street on Sunday afternoon and stayed there for around ten hours, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies say they called out to him and used drones and cameras to look inside the home while trying to get him to come out.
By Monday afternoon, crews were boarding up parts of the house that were damaged during the standoff.
People in the community and some of the man’s family members waited near blocked roads for much of the day. According to Martin County Sheriff Drew Robinson, the man eventually surrendered peacefully late Sunday night.
The standoff happened hours after a homicide in Hassell early Sunday morning. Officials have not said if the two cases are connected.
WITN has reached out to the sheriff’s office for more information, but few details have been released so far.
Three other men were also arrested Sunday by Martin County deputies.
According to warrants, they were charged with shooting into occupied buildings and went to court on Monday morning. Sheriff Robinson said those arrests are not connected to the homicide investigation.
