OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WITN) - Clean-up efforts continue after severe ocean overwash shut down Highway 12 over the weekend.

Just before 8:30 a.m. Monday, trucks and crews were seen on Highway 12 cleaning up the roadway, which experienced significant overwash on Saturday and Sunday.

The NCDOT says the road is closed on Ocracoke between the Northern Ferry Terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens.

It’s also closed on Cedar Island between Old Cedar Island Road and Lola Road due to overwash.

Highway 12 on Pea Island has reopened between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe.

The Hatteras-Ocracoke and Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferries have also suspended service due to the conditions.

The DOT alert says Highway 12 on Ocracoke is expected to reopen by 12 p.m. tomorrow.
