KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - It was a record-breaking Thursday night at Grainger Stadium, home of the Down East Bird Dawgs, where the team attempted to break a world record by serving up what might just be the world’s most expensive cheesesteak.

It’s called the ‘Great Dane,’ and it comes up to $200.25.

Sander Stotland, the Bird Dawgs Food and Beverage Manager, says it’s a record breaking idea that he came up with after making a joke with a colleague who is from Philadelphia, to challenge Philadelphia’s most expensive cheesesteak, which stands at $140.00.

“So, we have a special semolina bun and then on it we have wagyu beef,” he said. “Then we put the cheese we imported from Italy with truffles infused in it, and then we have black summer truffles that we put on there as well.”

A side of 24-karat-gold French fries, tossed in white truffle oil, also comes with it.

Sherrail Graham, one woman who helped cook the meal, says it’s a luxurious combo that makes her feel honored to be a part of.

“I feel great,” she said. “I mean to be here, all in here cooking a sandwich that I never heard of before and just in here having fun with it. By looking at the ingredients and what they had to use, meat that I never heard of before and- it just- that’s a whole lot of money sandwich.”

While the price tag made some fans do a double take, one woman who was the first to buy it says the cheesesteak was worth it.

“It was a little...I didn’t know what I was getting into really,” Judy Ellis, who is a Kinston resident said. “But it’s really good, I mean I took a bite and it’s really good.”

She says she now feels a part of the history.

“I never have broken a record on anything but I broke a record on this so there you go,” she said.

The Down East Bird Dawgs are planning to submit this to the Guinness Book of World Records in a few days as the most expensive cheesesteak ever sold.
