Preparations for Greenville Town Common construction begin next week
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Several areas of Greenville’s Town Common will close next week for its highly anticipated construction project.
The City of Greenville says construction at the park will begin in early August.
To prepare, the Town Common’s parking lot, kayak launch, fishing pier and boat ramp will close next week until further notice.
Crews will begin mobilizing equipment the weeks of July 21st and 28th.
The city says the playground, restrooms and Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza will remain open to the public as construction gets underway.
Access to the greenway will also stay open near the Town Common pedestrian bridge, and there will be a pedestrian route through the park that will detour to First Street.
The construction is part of the city’s Town Common Bulkhead and Esplanade Project, which was approved by the city council in May.
The project is expected to take 400 days and will replace the 57-year-old bulkhead, which the city says will help with flooding. It will also add a multi-use path that connects the park east-to-west.
Other upgrades include terraced seating, overlooks, plazas, a boat dock and a renovation to the amphitheater’s loading zone.
The city says community events will not be held at the Town Common while construction is happening. In the meantime, some events will be relocated to other town parks and facilities.
