High pressure and dust plume suppressing tropical formation
The Atlantic Basin is seeing conditions that will stifle tropical development
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - This year’s hurricane season is off to a quiet start with no activity yet in Atlantic Basin.
The season officially began on Sunday and runs through the end of November. Tropical Storm Alvin formed in the Pacific Ocean on May 28th.
A large plume of dust off of the Saharan Desert has stretched its way across the Atlantic, reaching the Caribbean and heading towards Florida. An over-abundance of dust tends to stifle tropical activity as it dries out the atmosphere, limiting thunderstorm formation. The dust, plus a large area of high pressure over the Atlantic, will likely keep the tropical eastern forecast quiet for this week.
As Western North Carolina is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, NOAA is predicting between 13 and 19 named storms. The average hurricane season has 14 named storms.
Forecasters say six to 10 of those storms are expected to be hurricanes, and three to five of those could be major hurricanes this year.
