GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The controversy surrounding a giant American flag in Greenville appears to be on track to be resolved.

Mayor PJ Connelly says that during the city’s planning session today, city council voted unanimously to direct staff to develop an ordinance that would allow the flag to fly at Camping World.

The city began citing Camping World last Wednesday. The first citation brought a $50 fine, the second citation $100, while each subsequent one is $250.

As of Friday morning, there were at least six citations for a total of $1,150 in fines.

Camping World, at the corner of Evans Street and Red Banks Road, started flying the flag in October from a 120-foot flag pole it installed.

The flag is nearly 15 times bigger than the allowable flag on non-residential property in the city, while the pole cannot exceed 70 feet.

The CEO of Camping World says the flag is not coming down.
