GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - ECU football season kicks off fall camp in a few weeks. During the spring we had the chance to meet and interview several new and also familiar coaches. Over the next week we’ll share some of their thoughts on the fall. Defensive Coordinator Blake Harrell is back and ready to offer no quarter in any quarter this fall.

“We just focus on what is in front of you. That’s our young men, our program and how can we get better and win games next fall,” says Harrell, “That’s what my main focus has been on. The stat that matters is wins and that is the only thing.”

The offense, new coordinator and new quarterbacks got much of the attention in the spring and will likely at fall camp. Defensively some big pieces left like Jeremy Lewis and safety Julius wood made pro camps. A few players transferred leaving big holes of opportunity on defense for gamedays.

“Whether it is guys that have been here and developed into that role or we added a few transfers defensively,” says Harrell, “Those are guys obviously we want to fit into the Pirate mold. Being Pirates and being what we all represent and I think they will. I’m excited about this group.”

The 2023 defense gave up 341 yards and 22 and a half points per game. 84 Tackles for a loss, 18 sacks, 10 fumbles recovered and 6 interceptions all very good ranking 37th in total defense in the country. But coach Harrell wants to be closer to the top in 2024. He feels the next Pirates up will be ready to elevate.

“That’s part of our success we always play a lot of guys. 20 to 22 to 23 guys per game so young guys do have experience,” says Harrell, “So, when it comes time for them to be the starter or be the main focus, a guy we need to depend on that they are ready for their moment.”

AAC Football Media Days are coming up July 22nd and 23rd.
