Highway 12 experiencing major overwash after morning high tide

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Parts of Highway 12 are closed after a dune was breached during this morning’s high tide.

Hwy 12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe is shut down.

The NCDOT says the high tide breached the dune near the Pea Island Visitor Center, causing significant overwash in the area.

Officials expect similar conditions over the next several high tide cycles as the coastal low-pressure system moves along the Outer Banks.
