Pitt County standoff suspect found dead inside home, deputies say
PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Pitt County deputies say the suspect in Tuesday’s standoff on Highway 43 was found dead inside the home, while an off-duty Greenville police officer who lived there was injured.
Deputies were called to the home on Highway 43 near Chicod School around 7:45 a.m. for a report of domestic violence.
Deputies say EMS took a woman to ECU Health Medical Center for treatment.
Greenville police confirm that woman is one of their officers and say she is expected to recover.
Deputies say Anthony Maimone was known to still be inside the home, but he was not responding when they tried to contact him.
As a safety precaution, deputies say they blocked traffic on Highway 43, and a public warning was shared with residents.
Additional units were called to the home to assist, including the SBI and EMS.
After several unsuccessful attempts to contact Maimone, a tactical team went into the home, where they found him dead.
Deputies say it appears the 41-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The road reopened to traffic before 12:30 p.m. yesterday.
Deputies say their investigation remains ongoing.
“Domestic violence affects people from every walk of life,” Greenville police said in a statement. ”It does not discriminate based on profession, background, or circumstance, and law enforcement officers are not immune. Yesterday’s events serve as a heartbreaking reminder of the very personal challenges that can affect those who dedicate their lives to serving others."
