UAB football player accused of assaulting 2 teammates before final home game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player is accused of stabbing two of his teammates ahead of the Blazers’ game against the University of South Florida.

The UAB Police Department is investigating a reported stabbing that took place Saturday morning at the Football Operations Center, according to the university.

The university reported two players were injured in the assault. Birmingham Fire and Rescue confirmed two people were taken to the hospital.

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen reported the players are in stable condition.

“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition,” the university said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover.”

The third player, the suspect in the stabbing, was taken into police custody.

UAB is not releasing the names of the players involved at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

However, WBRC confirmed that Daniel Mincey was taken into custody by UAB Campus Police on Saturday. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder, according to Jefferson County jail records.

Mincey, an offensive lineman, who transferred to the school in May, was previously at the University of Kentucky. He is described the team’s online roster as a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida.

UAB played against the Bulls Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at the Protective Stadium as scheduled. The game is the Blazers’ final home game, and seniors were honored during Senior Day. Some players did opt to sit out due to the incident.

According to Mortensen, counseling will be provided to players affected by the incident.

“UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students,” the university said. “Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”

Mortensen declined to share further information since the investigation is still ongoing.

The Blazers lost 48-18 to South Florida to fall to 3-8 on the season and 1-6 in the American Conference.
