GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Easter is Sunday, and many celebrations are underway.

Classic activities like pictures with the Easter bunny, egg hunts, and dying Easter eggs will be the theme of the weekend, but with egg prices still on the rise, many families are having to change their easter traditions.

Gracie, the Vineyard Preschool student, said, “I paint Easter eggs. Where they have candy.”

“I love pink Easter eggs,” says Sutton, another Vineyard Preschool student.

This year, the traditional Easter activities will cost you a pretty penny. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports egg prices rose more than 60% over the past year, costing $6.23 on average for a dozen.

The Vineyard Preschool Director, Merrie Boone, says, that’s why they’re saving where they can. “Food waste—we’re not going to dye Easter eggs or anything, so we’re actually doing a really low-waste craft right now. We have one of our teachers who got the little craft bins, the little cardboard trays, she got those donated for free, and we got our parents to donate egg cartons. Just doing alternative crafts.”

Boone told WITN, the preschool has been doing other fun Easter activities like “A spring craft where we’re making wreaths, we’re painting flowers, and we’re putting them on wreaths for parents to hang on their doors.”

If you’re looking to save while also having an extra special Easter holiday, Boone says it’s less about the financial aspect of fun festivities and more so about loved ones coming together.

“Our parents are coming in for a parent party, and we’re going to do a parent-led party with story time and craft, so we’re all celebrating together and are just having a fun time,” Boone told WITN.

To stay up to date on the current egg prices, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases new data each month.
