A popular sub restaurant in Greenville spent the weekend working to make sure children are fed during the COVID-19 crisis.

Jersey Mike's Subs donated sub sandwiches to feed 4,000 school children in Pitt County on Saturday.

The subs were distributed at seven sites for drive-by and walk-up pickup from 12 until 2 p.m.

"When I heard that local kids who depend on school lunch during the week may not have enough to eat on weekends, I knew we had to step up to provide an extra meal," said Jersey Mike's Franchise Owner Wes Shepherd.

Parents and volunteers came to help pass out the subs as the community comes together to help feed children without school meals to rely on.

"Its really neat to watch the community pull together in very out of the box ways and think of new ways to safely help each other," said Kylene Divvle, the parent of a Pitt County student.

At least one of the distribution locations at South Greenville Elementary ran out of 800 subs before the 2 p.m. cutoff.
