A correctional officer is facing charges after an inmate was found with marijuana and a cellphone.
The Hyde County Sheriff's Office says correctional officer Joshua Carawan of Chocowinity was arrested after an inmate, Adrian Cofield, was found with marijuana, a cellphone, tobacco, and a knife.
It happened Tuesday at Hyde Correctional Institution.
Carawan is facing charges of furnishing tobacco and a controlled substance to an inmate.
Cofield is now also facing charges of possession of an electronic communication device, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of tobacco while in the custody of North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
The investigation continues and officials say more arrests are possible.
The Department of Public Safety says Carawan resigned Tuesday, just before he was arrested. The man had worked at prisons in both Hyde and Craven counties for the past 8-1/2 years.
