Fatal accident shuts down U.S. 70 near Havelock

A man is dead after troopers say his pickup truck ran off a busy Eastern Carolina highway this afternoon.
The Highway Patrol says the single vehicle accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on U.S. 70 and Flanners Beach Road, west of Havelock.
It appeared the truck was heading westbound and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes. The pickup ended up in the woods on the other side of the highway.
An EastCare helicopter landed on the highway, but was not needed.
Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions due to the accident.
Troopers are still investigating why the driver lost control of his pickup truck.
