Adopt, don’t shop for National Pet Adoption Week in Greenville
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - National Pet Adoption Week is underway at PetSmart in Greenville, bringing local rescue groups together to help connect animals with families across the East.
Military veteran Arzu Olivieri said adopting a dog years ago while serving in the military showed her the value of having a companion at home.
“About 20 years ago, I adopted a dog when I was in the military. I had her for almost 17 years until she passed away,” Olivieri said. “Having that dog was great.”
Rescue organizations, including Winter’s Grace Animal Rescue, are set up during the event to introduce adoptable pets and share their stories — from animals rescued from hoarding situations to those found abandoned in unlikely places.
Winter’s Grace President Erika Drake said adoptions help more than one animal at a time.
“We get calls every day, as there’s always an animal in need. We can’t make the space unless we adopt some out,” Drake said. “Without the fosters and people adopting these babies, we can’t help anyone else.”
Drake also emphasized responsible pet ownership. Pets available for adoption are microchipped and spayed or neutered.
“It’s very important, we don’t want to contribute to any more population because there’s only so many places these babies can go,” Drake said.
Olivieri said the event has also opened her mind to fostering. She is considering fostering a dog named Piglet and plans to apply to see how the dog does at home with her cats.
“So, I think moving forward, we’ll probably just do the application, see how the dog does at home with the cats, and see if they get along,” Olivieri said.
Each adoption includes a starter kit with adoption papers, treats, toys and other supplies new pet owners may need.
The National Pet Adoption Week event continues through Saturday. Winter’s Grace Animal Rescue will be at PetSmart in Greenville from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
