Mathletics Competition for elementary students held in Beaufort County

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Young math wizards from several elementary schools here in the east had the chance to show off their skills at a math competition.

Third through fifth graders at five different Beaufort County elementary schools participated in the BCS Mathletics Competition held at Beaufort County Community College.

This five and a half hour event featured several activities with each student walking blindly into some challenges, with other events explained and students were able to prepare for, according to K-12 Instructional Support Specialist with Beaufort County Schools who also co-directed the Math Competition, Lesley Holley.

Fourth grader, Bennick Mizelle, attends John Small Elementary and says math is his favorite subject.

“I like multiplying and doing exponents and that kind of stuff,” Mizelle said.

Fourth grader, Emma Cutler attends Chocowinity Primary School and participated in the fishbowl challenge.

“They are going to draw a math problem out of a bowl and they are going to ask you and you are going to have to solve it in your head,” Cutler said.

Urgent Care Down East sponsored the event providing medals and goody bags for each of the participants.
