GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Board games, raffles, and friendly competition are bringing people together in Greenville for a cause close to many participants’ hearts.
The BGS Warriors and ECU’s Board Gaming and Table Top Society are hosting their 13th annual Extra Life event to raise money for the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health.
“A lot of our members have used the hospital as they’ve grown up. A lot of our community members, their kids have used the hospital,” said Dr. Karen Voytecki, the event’s coordinator. “And so to be able to give back to a place that means so much to us is wonderful.”
Over the past 13 years, the group has raised more than $75,000. Organizers said they had already raised more than $6,600 this year before the event began.
The money goes directly to the children’s hospital, helping fund medical equipment and programs that comfort children during their stay.
For volunteer Naomi Rollar, the event is a chance to give back while doing something she enjoys.
“It feels amazing. It’s kind of a win-win for everybody,” Rollar said. “We’re here having fun, and we’re also raising money for the children, so there’s no downside to it.”
The three-day event features board games, raffles, food, and prizes. Volunteer Kailis Smith said it’s also an opportunity for neighbors to come together.
“It’s really engaging, but it’s also just nice to have the community come together and help each other out,” Smith said.
The event continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion building in Greenville. It is free and open to the public.
