Two Democrats file to run against Rep. Murphy in 3rd District race

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Two Democrats are entering the race for the 3rd congressional district seat.

Thursday, U.S. Army veteran Allison Jaslow officially filed to run in the Democratic primary. Three days earlier, Raymond Smith, Jr. filed to run as a Democrat as well.

This comes a week after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said the seat was in play.

Last month, judges allowed the state to redraw congressional maps aimed at flipping a seat to Republicans in the state’s only swing seat.

The new map gave the 1st District, currently represented by Democrat Don Davis, six GOP-leaning counties.

Four counties that were in the 1st District moved into the 3rd District, currently represented by Republican Greg Murphy.
