UPDATE: Three ECU football players suspended after Greenville police say they shot gun into air

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Three East Carolina University football players have been suspended indefinitely after police say they were shooting a gun into the air inside Greenville city limits.

According to a Greenville police spokeswoman, Sunday, just before 6:00 a.m., officers went to a shots-fired call at 218 Locust Drive.

While on the way there, police say officers heard gunshots in the area.

When they arrived, officers spoke with 21-year-old Jackson “J.D.” Lampley and 22-year-old Preston Carr outside the home, both of whom police say admitted to shooting a gun.

According to police, 21-year-old Brock Spalding stayed inside the home and initially refused to exit or respond to officers’ attempts to make contact, but the situation was soon resolved.

According to the ECU football page, Lampley and Carr are defensive linemen, and Spalding is listed as a wide receiver.

“ECU Athletics is aware of the arrests of three members of our football team, and we are continuing to gather information,” the athletic department said in a statement to WITN. “All three individuals have been suspended indefinitely from all team activities.”

Spalding was charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, and resist, delay, and obstruct a public officer.

Lampley and Carr were both charged with discharging a firearm within city limits.

No injuries were reported, according to police.

This is an active investigation, and officials say more charges are possible.
