BOURBON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) - On the eve of Memorial Day, one central Kentucky farm took advantage of their flowers in full bloom to bring awareness to the reason for the long weekend.

For the third year in a row, Middle Springs Farm brought hayrides full of visitors to their blooming poppy field.

Owner Justin Menke said they are in full bloom for only about three weeks out of the year.

“The poppy is a very visual, vibrant type of symbol of that holiday,” said Menke. “We happen to be in a climate zone where we can actually get the poppy to bloom on Memorial Day.”

A sign can be found in the field to remind visitors of the flower’s significance.

“The poppy is a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers and it has been since World War I internationally, actually,” said Menke. “I think Memorial Day is probably one of those holidays that people don’t necessarily stop and think about the holiday.”

Menke said he hopes the event serves as both a time to spend with loved ones while also remembering the families who are missing loved ones during this weekend and throughout the year.

“Even if you don’t have a deep personal connection, just kind of appreciating their sacrifice to help create the country we all enjoy,” said Menke.
