Crews continue battling Black Swamp Fire in Croatan National Forest
JONES COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Crews are still working to contain the fire still burning in the Croatan National Forest.
The Black Swamp Fire was first noticed Sunday afternoon and has so far consumed 950 acres of forest.
The U.S. Forest Service says the fire is still 60% contained.
Crews from the U.S. Forest Service, North Carolina Forest Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were called in to assist with battling the wildfire.
Firefighters say they are using infrared mapping tools to detect underground heat and quickly handle any flare-ups with water drops. They are also using canals, pumps, and sprinklers to douse the remaining hot spots.
Crews are using canals, pumps, and sprinklers to pour water on the smoldering organic material.
On Wednesday, firefighters placed large agricultural sprinklers to draw water from the No Name Canal to help improve containment.
Three helicopters were also dropping water from above.
The Forest Service says the fire does not pose a risk to nearby communities, but the public should avoid areas near the fire.
As containment efforts continue, WITN will keep you updated on the latest developments as soon as they are available.
