Wednesday on the ECU campus, a sixteen member Greek Life Task Force met for the first time.

The task force, which is made up of alumni, faculty, community leaders and students received a charge from Chancellor Cecil Staton at the beginning of the meeting to identify issues and create a plan to fix problems that have recently bogged down campus Greek Life.

"The task force really wants to understand what are some of the underlying issues that led to chapter closures this year," said Greek Life Director John Mountz, whose team is helping provide information to the task force, adding, "We are going to summarize that, provide that to them, and that will help them define the question, what is it, what problem is the task force trying to solve."

In the past year, 6 fraternities and sororities have either closed or were suspended at ECU.

The task force says they will be working to make sure the problems stop there by looking at current practices involved in the internal governance and accountability of Greek organizations, as well as the recruitment and the education of new Greek organization members.

A final report is due back to the chancellor by December 14, meaning that the task force has only one semester to craft their plan and suggest changes.

The group will meet again in just two weeks on August 22nd for a presentation on what exactly happened that led to the suspension or closing of those 6 Greek organizations.
