Third person charged in deadly attempted robbery in Craven County

CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A third person has now been charged in a deadly attempted robbery that happened last week in Craven County.

Johnson / Leal / Velez

Ashley Velez, of Cove City, was arrested Friday on a charge of accessory after the fact.

Velez, along with Anthony Johnson and Brittany Leal, appeared before a judge this morning in New Bern.

Johnson is charged with murder, while Leal is charged with attempted armed robbery.

Killed at Grady's Old Country Store on Old Highway 70 in Cove City was Scottie Morton.

An arrest warrant says Velez helped Johnson avoid arrest after the attempted robbery and shooting, "providing aid and shelter for the defendant".

Court documents also say Leal tried to take $5,000 in cash from the business.

The judge ordered Johnson to continue to be held without bond, and kept Leal's bond at $500,000 and Velez's bond at $100,000.

All three were given court appointed attorneys and given August 22nd as their next court date.
