New video shows chaos on Front Street night Marine was killed in downtown stabbing
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New video reveals the chaos that engulfed Front Street the night a U.S. Marine was killed and three other people were sent to the hospital in two separate stabbing incidents.
According to Wilmington Police, the stabbings happened minutes apart, within a block of each other on Front St., shortly after 2:00 a.m. April 5.
According to prosecutors, Davy Spencer stabbed 21-year-old U.S. Marine Daniel Montano, and injured two other Marines, in one of the incidents. Spencer remains in custody, facing several charges related to the attack including second-degree murder.
A separate stabbing up the street, which WPD says happened just two minutes later, seriously injured a 22-year-old woman. Jazya Muldrow-Green, 20, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Wilmington Police said Montano and two other Marines were stabbed around 2:10 a.m., with officers responding to multiple fights in the area around that time.
Video from WECT’s downtown weather camera shows crowds spilling onto Front Street after bars closed at 2 a.m. The video doesn’t show a significant police presence near the intersection of Front and Princess St.
At 2:09 a.m., a crowd of people is visible. After an apparent altercation, someone drops to the ground, appearing injured.
Moments later, a driver gets out of a white car that was stopped at the intersection and attacks someone from behind before quickly driving away. The person who’s attacked appears to walk across the street alone after staying on the ground for a few moments.
On Monday, WPD Lt. Kevin Tully said they don’t believe the attack shown in the video is tied to the stabbings. The detective said they have no report of someone getting punched that night.
As the car drives away at 2:10 a.m., a group of people run across Princess Street, away from the camera. That’s where a bystander shot a viral video showing a fight in the street and Montano bleeding out on the sidewalk, with multiple WPD officers in the vicinity.
First responder cars begin arriving to the intersection of Front and Princess at 2:12 a.m.
At that timestamp, Wilmington Police say Muldrow-Green stabbed a woman up the street. At 2:14 a.m., the video shows a crowd rushing the street, toward the sidewalk where police say the attack happened. A police car arrives at the intersection.
About 10 minutes later, police set up crime scene tape around the intersection. Video shows an ambulance and police driving up Front St., toward the scene of the second stabbing.
As downtown clears out, police had parts of Front Street blocked off until after 3 a.m.
Wilmington Police Chief Ryan Zuidema declined to answer questions about the new video, but previously said there’s more to the stabbings than what appeared in the viral video.
“The officers did the absolute best they could under the circumstances, with all those other things going on,” Zuidema said.
A Wilmington Police spokesperson said they’re still investigating the stabbings, and had no further information to share as of Monday.
