CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A New Bern alderman has been nominated to fill the unexpired term of one Eastern Carolina state senator.

The Craven County Republican Party says that Bob Brinson was nominated Tuesday night by the 2nd Senatorial District Committee to fill the unexpired term for former State Senator Jim Perry.

The seat represents Lenoir, Beaufort, and Craven Counties.

Brinson is currently a New Bern alderman for ward 6.

The approval now goes to Gov. Roy Cooper who has 7 days to make the appointment. If he doesn’t, then the appointment becomes automatic.

Brinson won the Republican primary for the newly drawn State Senate District 3, which will still represent Lenoir, Beaufort, and Craven counties.

Perry, who has served three terms, announced his resignation early this month citing the demanding schedule and a desire to spend more time with his family.
