The competition to be East Carolina's starting quarterback this fall is "wide open" according to offensive coordinator Dave Nichol.
Sophomore Kurt Benkert was Shane Carden's main backup last year. Benkert tallied just 58 yards on 8-of-10 passing in 2014. He did rush for 2 touchdowns on 23 yards.
Cody Keith and Blake Kemp are also factoring in the position battle. Keith is returning to full status after missing the better part of two years due to injury. Kemp, who transferred from Mesa Community College in 2014, redshirted last fall before seeing significant playing time this past spring.
The last candidate for the spot is a walk-on. Philip Nelson spent two years with the Minnesota Golden Gophers where he racked up more 2,000 yards passing. He left the Twin Cities and transferred to Rutgers. He was then kicked off the Scarlet Knights after a fight at a nightclub in Mankata, Minnesota in 2014.
